House of Secrets

I grew up in a house full of secrets. My family looked like a picture-perfect family on the outside, but on the inside, we were all trying to survive. I did survive. I share my poem because I believe one person’s story is someone else’s hope. Hope changes, empowers, and gives life! I’m so grateful I’m living to spread the hope that turned my story around.

Everything seemed so perfect
Everything seemed so right
I faked it with a nice smile
Oh but I was living a lie
It’s time to turn on the spotlight
to see what was hiding inside
I’m opening all the windows
to the secrets of my life
Welcome to my house of secrets

I was only seven when my innocence was taken
and the image of all good was tainted
Grandpa stood before me naked—right then and there, my world was shaken
My only brother was a mess
Daddy left bruises on his chest, so up he left with no return—the drugs eventually took their turn

Everything seemed so perfect
Everything seemed so right
We faked it with nice smiles
Oh but we were living lies
It’s time to turn on the spotlight
to see what was hiding inside
We’re opening all the windows
to the secrets of our lives
Welcome to our house of secrets

Little sister would be next
Daddy went and lay inside her bed
playing monsters in the middle of the night—oh no! She was only 11 years old
Paralyzed by fear, Mommy couldn’t wipe our tears
She couldn’t help herself, she couldn’t face the pain
She closed the door and looked the other way
leaving her children in dismay

Everything seemed so perfect
Everything seemed so right
We faked it with nice smiles
Oh but we were living lies
It’s time to turn on the spotlight
to see what was hiding inside
We’re opening all the windows
to the secrets of our lives
Welcome to our house of secrets

Everybody has secrets
Everybody wants to hide them
But it’s time to turn the lights on
It’s time to turn the lights on
Your light can turn somebody’s light on

Everything seemed so perfect
Everything seemed so right
We faked it with nice smiles
Oh but we were living lies
It’s time to turn on the spotlight
No secrets are hidden inside
We’ve opened up all the windows
No secrets, no more lies
Welcome to our house of secrets

    You know me.
    I know you.
    You have been through,
    a part of hell.
I have lived there, for a time also…
Your dad was like my owner.
One day, I will buy my freedom!
I still don’t have the “right” to own property, or walk freely.
Your smile. Your hair. I have met you. You strengthen me.
    Never give up!
    Fight for us men also!
