I Have Overcome, and So Can You!
To tell you my life story would take a lifetime. Writing a book just won’t do! So where do I start? I am fearfully and wonderfully made for one. Many people tell me that I am the strongest woman in the world. You could say I have faith that stands the test of time. The woman you see today is all smiles and positivity. As nice as that sounds, my life has had some dark days.
I have been fighting obstacles since the day I was born. Not only was I premature, I was diagnosed with hydrocephalus, which is the buildup of fluid in the cavities (ventricles). It causes pressure on the brain. I also have spastic cerebral palsy; spasticity is a form of hypertonia. This results in stiff muscles.
Because of my conditions, I was told by doctors that I would never walk or talk. To make it worse, my mother used drugs. Because of her actions, I was placed in foster care. You could imagine the feelings of emptiness and loneliness I felt. But those feelings were replaced with joy. I was saved by my aunt, a pure angel who came and took me in.
Have you ever had or have, just one person in your life that makes you feel you can do the unthinkable? Well, for me, that is my aunt. Because of my aunt’s love, I am the strong woman I am today! She taught me that despite my disabilities, I can achieve anything. With her always having faith in me, I did not lose hope in myself.
If someone came to me and said that they could make me like everyone else, I would walk away. That sounds crazy, right? Well, having these disabilities is not a curse, but a blessing. Later on in life, I realized that I am here to help people.
My imperfections not only help strengthen me, but also allow me to strengthen others. Over time, I literally had to start transforming myself by renewing my mind. To be honest, I cannot do this without staying close to my Heavenly Father every step of the way. These disabilities I have are a part of my life, but they do not run my life.
To anybody who has disabilities, the world sees them as limits, but we are limitless. We are different, so be proud to stand out. I see my disabilities as a reminder that I am a fighter. Now, today, at 29 years old, I am happily married. Not only am I walking and talking, but achieving what I never thought possible.
NEVER NEVER NEVER let someone put limits on what you can and cannot do.
